As you know, peak summer is essentially here, and so are the outdoor events that accompany this excellent time of year. With so much to look forward to, the options can seem overwhelming at times. After all, this season is limited in duration, better make the most of it! While we’d prefer that there be no detractors of our outdoor enjoyment, the reality of living in the Northeast means we have to contend with all sorts of insects. In particular, mosquitoes. Yes, mosquitoes are one of the nemeses of the outdoor living season, and their reputation as such is warranted. Not only do these creatures create an incessant whining that is almost intolerable, but they also deliver painful, itchy bites that can leave you scratching for days. And, to add salt to the wound, they take some of your blood to go produce even more mosquitoes. The injustice of an airborne thief stealing blood to raise young that will return to suck more blood.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to discourage mosquitoes from achieving their goal. Firstly, when outdoors consider wearing long clothing that shields the skin from probing mosquitoes. While this may be uncomfortable in the summer heat, long clothing can defend you from these insects. However, if long clothing isn’t your cup of tea, insect repellant is a great way to keep mosquitoes from biting you. The gold standards for insect repellant are those brands that include some amount of DEET in the solution. This chemical is loathsome to mosquitoes, and the insects will avoid biting you like the plague. Such measures are probably a good idea if you have plans to attend events like Outdoor Movie Magic on the lawn of the Beals Memorial Library at 7 p.m. on Thursdays this August! However, if applying chemicals to your skin seems unsavory, you can use repellants that use essential oils like that of the lemon eucalyptus.
If these methods seem inconvenient, don’t worry. There’s another method of mosquito control that will keep mosquitoes away from your yard!
