Senator Richard Ross is working to make sure the residents of Central Massachusetts are staying informed and better protected from Lyme Disease. As someone who contracted Lyme Disease himself, he knows how quickly the disease can be debilitating.
Recent articles about Senator Ross in the Wicked Local Wayland and Wrentham Times discussed how he was unaware of the symptoms of Lyme Disease before contracting it. In his case, he initially felt feverish and fatigued. It wasn’t until his face went numb that he saw a doctor who gave him his Lyme Disease diagnosis and treatment. He has posted several times, on his Facebook page, stories about his support for public education, increased awareness by healthcare providers and mandated insurance coverage regarding the disease.
Senator Ross emphasizes in the story how anyone infected is at a high risk for more serious health problems like arthritis, meningitis and facial and limb weakness. He adds that Lyme cases in Massachusetts have more than doubled in four years and now affects 50 out of every 100,000 people in our state. He also mentions the rising costs for treatment and the refusal of some insurance providers to pay for care.
He was a member of the Special Commission to Conduct an Investigation and Study of the Incidence and Impacts of Lyme Disease. The report of the commission discussed the legislative status of several bills targeting Lyme Disease. The proposals developed by the commission were very comprehensive. With broad and diverse membership, the commission included politicians, health department leaders, physicians, scientists and members of the public. The Senator continues to sponsor the Pesticide Licensing and Mosquito Control bill, Senate Bill S1820 that he submitted to the Senate Committee on Ways and Means on May 22, 2013.
As a former patient with Lyme Disease, he has a personal commitment to the passage of comprehensive legislation on Lyme Disease in our state. We support his efforts and hope every Central Mass resident does also.
