Mosquito Repellents & Bite Treatments

Over the last few years, we have seen mosquito infestations on the rise. Health officials have recommended that people take precautions against mosquito bites to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases like the zika virus and West Nile virus. Taking precautions to avoid getting bitten is the best defense against mosquito-borne diseases.

Mosquito Repellents for You & Your Family

If you are spending time outdoors in a place that hasn’t been treated with Mosquito Squad’s barrier treatment, it’s still important to protect yourself from mosquitoes the best you can. There are many different personal mosquito repellents on the market today, like wristbands, personal fans, and skin patches.

However, the most effective personal mosquito repellent is one that can be misted or rubbed onto your exposed skin. You should only purchase EPA-registered insect repellents that have DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or the oil of lemon eucalyptus as the active ingredient. Be sure to follow all instructions on the product’s label.

While outside during sunny days, apply sunscreen first, and then the insect repellent. Also, make sure to apply any mist products while outdoors – and away from food. Don’t forget to keep your face bite-free by applying repellent to your hands then carefully rubbing it in (rather than misting it directly on your face).

Treatment for Mosquito Bites: Home Remedies That Work

Even with the use of bug sprays, you could still end up with mosquito bites. Use these treatments to soothe itchy bites.

  • Aloe Vera - Aloe vera is a natural antiseptic that helps reduce inflammation and swelling from bug bites. You can buy soothing Aloe vera gels at drug stores or keep an Aloe vera plant in your home. The plant is easy to care for, and all you need to do is peel away the tough outer skin to find the soft gel inside. You can also chill the gel for cool and easy-to-apply relief.
  • Essential Oils - Try using lavender, tea tree, rosemary, or a combination of oils to create your own blend of bug bite relief. We recommend mixing small amounts of essential oils in a mist bottle to apply to any bug bites.
  • Ice - If you don’t have Aloe vera or oil blends, you can use ice or a cold compress to reduce any skin inflammation. Just hold an ice pack or a cool cloth around the affected skin area for a for a quick, simple and soothing remedy. Repellents aren’t the only way to keep mosquitoes from biting you. Mosquito Squad’s barrier treatments can remove the need for smelly or greasy bug sprays on your body.
