Join Us in Taking a Bite Out of Lyme Disease!

December 20, 2023

As demonstrated by the viral ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that raised over $100 million for ALS research in 2014, sometimes it takes a catchy and exciting social media challenge to get the word out about a serious issue.

That’s what the Lyme Disease Challenge — aka Take A Bite Out of Lyme Disease — is all about. The campaign kicked off this week and runs through May, coinciding with Lyme Disease Awareness Month. The challenge aims to raise awareness about the dangerous tick-borne disease and stop the growing epidemic. We participated in this challenge in the past and we invite you to join the movement with us again this year!

Here’s what you need to know about the #LymeDiseaseChallenge.

The Lyme Disease Challenge

How the Take A Bite Out Of Lyme Disease Challenge Began

There are an estimated 329,000 new cases of Lyme per year in the United States alone, and it is an incredibly complicated and challenging disease to live with. So, the Lyme community around the globe has united for this grassroots campaign. The goal is to spread awareness and raise funds for the Project Lyme, a nonprofit focused on prevention and early-stage detection of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness.

Why Does The Lyme Disease Challenge Matter?

The campaign’s message is that Lyme takes a “big bite” out of a person’s life, their family, and their finances. Now, survivors, supporters, and public figures all over the globe are biting back. In 2015 and 2016, the campaign spread to 45 countries and raised over $100,000 to support doctor training and research. This year, organizers hope to continue to spread awareness and raise funds to find a cure for this chronic, debilitating disease.

How Can You Participate And Help Take A Bite Out Of Lyme Disease?

Joining the movement is simple! Donate $10 or more to Project Lyme, a nonprofit focused on prevention and early-stage detection of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness. The goal is to increase the global participation of the Take a Bite Out of Lyme campaign and the purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness and funding for improved Lyme disease diagnosis and treatment. Support their movement for a 100% reduction in new Lyme disease cases by 2025.

Follow these simple three steps:

  • Take a bite! Bite a lime and take a photo or short video of your reaction. The more dramatic or silly, the better.
  • Share a fact. Share a brief fact about Lyme to spread the truth about this disease. Check out the Lyme Disease Challenge website to find a fascinating fact.
  • Pass it on. Challenge three other people to take a bite by mentioning them in your video or tagging them in your photo.

Post your video or photo and Lyme fact to all your social networks, and use the hashtag #LymeDiseaseChallenge. Then follow the challenge live on the campaign’s website!

If you prefer not to take a bite of lime, you can still make a donation to help the cause. Your donation is tax deductible.
