Summer heat and mosquito activity peaking, it’s a good time to review the best ways to prevent mosquito bites. Avoiding getting bitten has always been a concern in places where mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue Fever, Malaria and Yellow Fever are prevalent when mosquitoes bite, they cause a small itchy red bump on your skin. Some people develop an allergic skin reaction to the bites, and the bumps become large. Scratching the bites can lead to infections developing in the skin. So here are 4 D's to prevent mosquito bites:

1. DUSK TO DAWN

Peak biting periods of mosquitoes are early in the morning and in the evening before dusk. There are two types of disease-carrying mosquitoes: the aedes, responsible for chikungunya and dengue, and the anopheles, carrying malaria. At dusk and dawn the weather is generally milder than during full day, and warmer than during full night.

If you think it is a wonder why mosquitoes are most active during the twilight hours, let me present another thought. During the day and night, these worms are buried deep in the lymph nodes where they feed, but in the evening, the immature worms migrate from the lymph nodes and are found in huge numbers in the capillaries of the skin. They move into the skin capillaries just at the time the mosquitoes become active. For most species of mosquito in the United States, their activity peaks during the dusk hours. Avoid being outdoors during DAWN and DUSK, when mosquitoes are most active.

2. DRAIN

Reason mosquitoes are coming out of your drains is because water is not passing freely through the drains. It's making the drainpipe's surface moist enough for the mosquitoes to live and breed. No matter how clean your home is, a clogged drain pipe is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

3. DRESS

To avoid getting mosquito bites when spending time outside, make sure to wear clothes made of denim, wool, velvet, and nylon ripstop. The tighter the clothing, the easier it is for a mosquito to penetrate the layer of material. That being said, avoid wearing yoga pants, tights, and other lightweight garments when mosquitoes are most active. Loose-fitting clothing is ideal, but make sure the garment isn’t so loose that mosquitoes can get inside! Remember, the more skin your clothes cover, the better off you will be when it comes to mosquito bites. Cover exposed skin with long pants, shirts, and higher necklines.

4. DEFEND

If you’ve ever searched for an insect repellent, the labels can seem confusing, from the acronyms to the numbers. To help your shopping, we consulted experts about how to shop for an insect repellent that contain Deet or other effective repellents.
