Are You Lyme Literate?

Lyme disease is a disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi which is transmitted to humans by way of a tick bite from a tick that carries this bacteria. The prevalence of Lyme disease can be seen all over the United States. This disease is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. In many areas doctors misread the symptoms and diagnose sufferers with rheumatoid arthritis since the symptoms are closely related. Symptoms such as fatigue and what is described as “muscle freezes” closely mimic those of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

Many physicians do not believe that chronic Lyme disease even exists. This disbelief is also carried through to the 8,000 members of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. This disease is very real and there are very real numbers of people struggling to cope with the disease on a daily basis. This disease affects the quality of life for the sufferer and the sufferer’s families. Misunderstood by so many in the health care profession has left these patients with very little recourse or relief.

The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society is fighting for the voices of those that suffer from Lyme disease to be heard. This organization is made up of physicians and other health care advocates who argue that chronic Lyme disease is not only a diagnosable condition but one which is treatable with long-term antibiotics.

In the future we hope to see an end to the demoralizing experience many patients with Lyme disease have to suffer. One way we can arm ourselves is with knowledge. With knowledge comes power and people need to be empowered by learning more about Lyme disease. Here at Mosquito Squad of Franklin & Framingham we want to educate the community about the dangers of tick borne illness. One way to avoid these illness’ is to discourage the tick bite itself from occurring and this comes from proper education and prevention. We want everyone to become “tick knowledgeable” and “Lyme literate”.
