On December 13, 2013, the CDC released a surprising report. Reported were three people between 26 and 38 years old who died from cardiac complications within a nine-month period. That fact was not remarkable but upon testing, they all were infected with Lyme Disease. One of those 3 cases was a young hiker from here in NY.
The other victims were from Massachusetts and Connecticut. All three states are known for a high incidence of Lyme disease. After investigation, all three victims died from cardiac death. Their deaths were attributed to Lyme Carditis, inflammation of the heart muscle. Death from Lyme Carditis is rare but not new.
When reported by the Boston Globe, Dr. Joseph D. Forrester, one of the CDC report’s authors, agreed Lyme heart complications are not new. He went on to say, “However, given the severity of what happened and the tragedy of three young people dying suddenly, it was very important to investigate these cases.” In a study funded by the CDC in 2010, the journal Clinical and Infectious Diseases reported said, Lyme disease was listed as an underlying or multiple cause of death on 114 death records during 1999–2003.
There are 30,000 new cases of Lyme disease each year in the US. Some think this number is under-reported for various reasons. To complicate matters, the disease is often misdiagnosed. It’s important for you to know the health problems this disease may cause.
