Deer tick or Black-legged tick

Ixodes scapularis

The black-legged, or deer tick, larvae and nymphs feed on birds, squirrels and mice most often while the adult ticks prefers deer, where they get their name. The black-legged tick is the known source for the transmission of Lyme Disease as well as human Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis. Black-legged ticks can be as small as a poppy seed up to the size of a sesame seed.

Dog Tick

Dermacentor variabilis

The American dog tick larvae and nymph ticks typically uses small rodents like mice as hosts and the adults are found most often on dogs. The dog tick is about the size of a watermelon seed and can be identified by white lines on their back. Dog ticks are vectors for Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Tularemia.

Lone star tick

Amblyomma americanum

The Lone star tick larvae and nymphs feed on small animals but the nymphs as well as adults can use larger animals for their host. The Lone star tick is a reddish color with a white dot on its back. Lone star ticks can transmit Ehrlichiosis, Heartland Virus, STARI and Tularemia.
